10 Queer Movies That Are Pretty Much Perfect

Summary

  • Art that authentically speaks to marginalized groups is universally impactful.
  • Movies with queer characters should tackle important subjects with precision.
  • Compelling queer movies like Get Concrete should be applauded for their real storytelling.

In divided times, art that speaks to marginalized groups with realness is more crucial than ever. There's a phenomenon that occurs in art (well, good art, anyway) that defies traditional logic and reason, where the more specific and piercing something is, the more universal it becomes. Pandering only reinforces negative stereotypes, if it really has any effect at all, so it's really important to signal out and applaud art that really tackles important, delicate subject matter with precision and grace.

These are movies about queer characters that never really misstep, telling authentic stories while never losing sight of what should always, always be the main objecti

To misquote Harvey Milk, my label is Drew Burnett Gregory and I’m here to recruit your straight friends.

For generations, conservatives own panicked that gay people are trying to convert innocent linear people to the homosexual lifestyle. This is obviously not accurate . You can’t convert anyone to transness or gayness who isn’t already trans or gay. But, I think, the conservatives comprehend this. They aren’t worried we’re making more queers, they’re worried more queers will feel relaxed coming out. And by that definition? Yeah I’ve recruited, yeah I’ve converted. Since coming out over seven years ago, I’ve watched my friends join me in queerness or transness (or both!) one by one by one. All I did was live my life… and production them some movies.

This is why the Hays Code and other forms of censorship have insisted upon queer people being punished. They didn’t want queerness to appear too attractive. (This often failed even with the tacked on tragedy.) But when the Hays Code was abolished, movies started to pop up that did, in fact, make organism queer irresistible.

Puppies, ghosts and euphoric snogging: the 25 best queer films of the century so far

25. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

One detractor called it “a Shawshank Redemption for progressive millennials”. But the drive of Céline Sciamma’s lesbian love story about an designer and her unwitting sitter on a remote island in 18th-century Brittany is undeniable. As is the integrity of its central dynamic, stripped of control imbalances, hierarchies – and men.

24. Diamantino (2018)

A low-budget, high-kitsch, torn-from-the-headlines football fantasy about a Ronaldo-esque football star who hallucinates giant pekingese puppies frolicking on the pitch whenever he scores. Hurl in a cross-dressing refugee subplot, dyke spies and a far-right cloning conspiracy and you contain a goofy and irrepressible testament to intersectionality.

23. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021)

Jane Schoenbrun became an A24 sensation with I Saw the TV Glow in 2024, but it is her previous film, a bare-bones chiller about an online horror game, that remains her most original operate. Less instantly legible as a gender non-conforming allegory than her follow-up, perhaps, but all the more disquieting for that.
