It’s difficult to remember a time when Elton John was in the closet. And yet, much of the society was shocked when the flamboyant performer – who wore sparkly hot pants in concert and was followed to Manhattan lgbtq+ clubs – got candid about his personal animation in the Oct. 7, 1976, issue of Rolling Stone magazine.
This wasn’t orchestrated as a publicity stunt, by the magazine or John. In fact, John had been avoiding the compress during his run of shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden, which would be among his last before a planned hiatus. I just learned about a year ago that Elton John is gay. I predict it was just one of those things that everyone assumes everyone else knows, but nobody tells anyone else.
Then, the other time, I’m buying a sandwich in the local deli and the radio plays “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”, and I’m listening and thinking, “Umm, doesn’t this song more or less advise ‘bi’ as an alternative to ‘gay’?
