But the Saturday night, all of that disappeared, I was no longer a victim. I was a celestial body. You know I was a star and whether it was in my own mind or not, that’s really all that mattered because I contemplate that that taught me to be the person that I am today.

I am K Anderson and you are listening to lost spaces, the podcast that mourns the death of lgbtq+ nightlife. Every episode I talk to a other person about a venue from their past, the memories they created there and the people that they used to recognize. Drake Jensen is a Canadian country singer, who was born and grew up in the tiny Cape Breton Island, which is on the eastern coast of Canada. After coming out, he moved to the nearby metropolis of moncton, where he discovered triangles, the only gay bar in town, which closed in 2018. After 25 years of business, we caught up to discuss the strange gentrification of

If a queer cartographer mapped out LGBTQ bars, New Jersey would look fond a triangular border surrounding a hollow center. Jersey Town forms the northernmost point with Pint and Six26, backing into the densely packed offerings of New York Capital across the river. Philadelphia occupies the southwestern outpost, while Asbury Park completes the perpendicular angle in the southeast with Paradise and Georgie’s.

What’s in the space formed by these three vertices? Nothing — a gay Bermuda triangle where the bars that dare enter soon disappear.

That’s the void that the staff of The 244 See hopes to pack. The new LGBTQ bar opened at 244 Cedar St. in South Amboy on Oct. 11 a fitting observance of National Coming Out Day.

The 244 Spot occupies an unassuming home in a residential neighborhood. It opens into an intimate bar space that has the usual mirrors and tall tops of any standard drinking establishment, but the authentic charm sits in the belly of the building. Preserve going, around the pool table that testifies to the venue’s previous being alive as Danny Boy’s Irish Pub, and you’ll find yourself on a gyrate floor of cozy proportions that’s framed by neon lights, a touch of rai

A meme on Facebook finally helped me realize why the mass murder/shooting at Pulse in Orlando shook me to my very core.

Manny’s Den

When I was at college (Rutgers College), one daytime on the campus bus someone pointed out the gay block in New Brunswick, NJ, and for the next two and half years, I was fascinated by this dumpy little hole-in-a-wall with blackened out front window.

In my junior year of college, I finally acknowledged that my sexual interest in men wasn’t just a phase, and that I was indeed gay.   Coincidentally, my roommate that year was a gay man and at one point, I got up the courage to request him to take me to Manny’s.

By this time Manny’s had moved to a dark and ugly backstreet of New Brunswick, a couple of doors down from a locals bar catering to what seemed like a pretty rough crowd.  It took a bit of courage to just walk in that neighborhood, and perhaps even more for me to go to my first gay bar.  I was terrified and exhilarated.

But the minute we walked in the shadowy confines of Manny’s Den, I knew I was safe and I was with my people…for the first time in years.  My shoulders fell away from my ears and I relaxed listening to t
