A Marvin Gaye biopic is underway, thanks to Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine
He is one of the most iconic musicians of all time, with one of the most tragic stories - so it's astonishing that Marvin Gaye's life story has not yet been told on the big screen.
However, that's all set to change in the near future as rapper Dr. Dre and music mogul Jimmy Iovine - best known for co-founding Interscope Records and the Beats by Dre empire - have acquired the right to the soul legend's life story.
'What's Going On' will be directed by 'Menace II Society' director Allen Hughes, and the script will be written by poet and playwright Marcus Gardley.
There contain been multiple tries to bring Gaye's story to the screen in the past, including one where Lenny Kravitz was supposed to have portrayed the soul legend before eventually dropping out.
Both Gaye's estate and Motown Records fully support Dre and Iovine's initiative, and original song by Gaye - who died in 1984 at the age of 44, after being shot by his father following a physical altercation - will also feature. Marvin Gaye Biopic SEXUAL HEALING Casts New Lead
Long-in-development biopic swaps outs its lead actor.
Back in November it was announced that rocker-turned-actor Lenny Kravitz had been cast as Marvin Gaye in ‘Sexual Healing,’ a long-gesting biopic of the Motown legend that was to be directed by Julien Temple. Now Deadline is reporting that Jesse L. Martin (‘Law & Order,’ ‘Puncture,’ ‘Rent’) is set to replace Kravitz as the soul singer.
The clip will revolve around Gaye’s period spent in Europe in the early 1980s when the singer attempted to get his addictions under control and career endorse on track with the assist of British music promoter Freddy Cousaert (to be portrayed by Brendan Gleeson).
Martin was brought in to replace Kravtiz after Gaye’s son, Marvin Gaye III, objected to the casting and threatened legal action against the motion picture. S. Epatha Merkerson is attached to portray Gaye’s mother Alberta.

Terrence Howard didnotwant to get it on in a Marvin Gaye biopic.
The Empire alum said he turned down playing the late music icon in a movie because the role likely required him to kiss a man.
"I wouldn't have been proficient to do that," Howard admitted on the April 27 episode of Bill Maher's Club Random podcast. "That would f--k me. I would cut my lips off."
He continued, "If I kissed a male, I would cut my lips off."
The 56-year-old went on to explain that he wouldn't have been able to "fake it," noting, "I can't perform that character 100 percent."
Howard added, "I can't surrender myself to a place that I don't understand."
Gaye died at age 44 after being shot by his dad Marvin Homosexual Sr. in 1984. During his life, he was married to Anna Gordy from 1963 to 1977 and to Janis Hunter from 1977 to 1982.
