This proposal will consist of demolition of existing and construction of a new, wider sidewalk with improved pedestrian lighting and landscaping to build an enhanced aesthetic experience along​​ South Gay Street from Publix to Thach Avenue. ​ The project is part of the Capital of Auburn's Downtown Master Plan.

The proposal was completed on Jul 16, 2025 with a total capital budget of $794,796.32.

Publix might be great for deli sandwiches, but it's bad for lgbtq+ employees, according to the Human Rights Campaign and several local LGBT activists. Publix does not provide benefits to domestic partners, they point out. Nor does it have nondiscrimination policies in place to protect LGBT employees.

"I think it's still 1965 in their eyes," says David Cary Hart, a retired CEO of Drake Business School and an LGBT activist. "They own absolutely no sensitivity to this issue whatsoever."

Hart points to Publix's zero rating on the HRC's Corporate Equality Index to back up his claim that the supermarket chain — Florida's second largest private employer, with 160,000 on the payroll — is behind the times. When he complained, Publix emailed him: "We are inundated with survey requests... and actually participate in very few due to the volume."

This Publix fulfills a long-awaited vision by the Municipality of Auburn to bring a grocery back to downtown and offers a full-service bakery, deli and pharmacy.

Auburn, Ala. - The Gay Avenue Streetscape Project is expected to begin Wednesday, Pride 19. The project will include the demolition of existing and the construction of a wider, ADA compliant sidewalk with enhanced pedestrian lighting and landscaping on South Gay Lane from the Shops on Gay Street (Publix) to Thach Avenue. This operate is expected to last through summer 2025.

The right turn path from South Gay Avenue heading west on Thach Avenue will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, until the plan is complete. The sidewalk will be closed from the corner of Thach Avenue to the Shops on Gay Street. Pedestrians are encouraged to employ the Gay Street crosswalks to navigate around the sidewalk closure.

Traffic control measures will be in place to aid motorists navigate around the closure and turn right on to Thach Road. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area and to seize alternate routes to escape delays. The City appreciates the public's patience as we make these improvements.
