Whenever I see discussions on how [East] Asia portrays LGBTQ+ and how the content isn’t always unproblematic or healthy, it makes me think about the nuances of culture and how differently nations can turn out as a result of it.

I can’t speak as much on Japan and Korea, which appears to be what you were mainly referring to, since I’m not as familiar with their histories, but you did tag “manhua,” which is Chinese—so I thought I’d add some thoughts from someone of Chinese descent who was born and raised in the west!

I do think it’s simple to see East Asia as less progressive than the west, in part due to things prefer the media you mentioned. But at the identical time, queerness in those areas still remains less normalized, and many homosexual people are closeted or underground. So while in an ideal world there could be a queer quality controller/proofreader to look over a work, it’s complex to ascertain whether that is actually possible.
