Queer people are often forced to grow up in isolation and watch people who look like us acquire pathologized and cast as outsiders because they are different. So when we see somebody who looks like us cross over into the mainstream, it can feel like a victory.
This was how I felt when I discovered My Chemical Intimacy. I certainly wasn’t aged enough to be deconstructing queer theory and gender roles at thirteen, but I definitely see the band as an in advance indicator of my queerness, even though none of the members identified as queer.
Gerard Way was a rebellious, non-conforming individual whose entire career was a deliberate act of social transgression, from the the way he acted and dressed to the way he treated his fans. As a student of rock icons like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Nick Cave and Brian Eno, he was able to emulate what they did so well by constantly reinventing his image. Each album cycle was accompanied by new eras of storytelling and elaborate character-building that he was qualified to pull from his previous career as a comic book writer.

oh man. i can’t believe i’m a lorekeeper now but yeah give me a chance to talk about this. they kinda quieted down about it around Black Celebration cause they were getting BIG great and gerard got married but there’s so much. mikey way had a thing with pete wentz when they were both on warped in 2005, complete with coy-flirty posting about each other on myspace. gerard way and frank iero made out on stage a LOT amongst other things. (you have to google “summer of like” and “frerard proof” respectively here. i can’t link to all of it there’s too fucking much.) gerard and bert mccracken have both talked about their association being the inspiration for the “this is a song about getting fucked in the ass” song. there’s recordings of shows from the early 2000s with ray toro rolling around on the stage with his tongue down another guy’s throat. a lot of their lyrics talk about being the reject kids (which, yeah, ambiguous, but explain me that doesn’t resonate) and doing drag (not so ambiguous).

June is Pride month for the LGBTQ community. I'm straight but contemplate myself an ally to the community, with friends all over the spectrum: gay, lesbian, attracted to both genders, pansexual, non binary, transgender, and so on. I'm still teaching all the letters and identities, embracing all the colors of the rainbow. But did you know some of the artists you listen to are part of the LGBTQ world? These singers can make those in the LGBTQ community feel less alone...maybe cooler.
